Winter in Padstow 1

There’s something about Padstow in the quieter months that feels like a reset. The harbour is calmer, the streets less crowded and the water is silver and grey. It’s a time for slow mornings, bracing walks and cosy corners.

How to ‘reset’ this winter

Our mornings are unhurried. There are no packed itineraries, only the comfort of taking your time. If you wish, you can choose to check out late and ease gently into the day, lingering over the warmth of your room or a favourite chair by the window.

Breakfasts that take all morning

We never rush breakfast here. There’s time for multiple courses, freshly pressed juices, yoghurts and fruit, cooked dishes, cheese and ham, pastries and endless coffees. Sit in the conservatory with the world unfolding outside your window, Radio 2 playing softly, a newspaper in hand. Breakfast should be time well spent.

Walking the coastline

Padstow in winter is made for walks. The ferry is on your doorstep, careful to keep your feet dry as you race across the sand at low tide. The coast path stretches along cliffs and dunes, and our team are always happy to share the less well trodden routes, where the views leave you feeling renewed. For calmer moments, wander the streets of Padstow, cosseted by charming buildings, or choose from seven sandy beaches, each just a short drive away.

Soaking it all in

Draw a bath and sink in. Watch the steam, settle your shoulders and let the quiet outside your window seep in. Jill uses a long soak in a bath to reset her entirely, a simple pleasure in a rushed world.

Some rooms offer views from the bath itself: rooftops, the estuary, or the harbour beyond. Wrap yourself in warmth, pick up a book, pour a drink, and let the simple act of being still restore you.

Seasonal Dining

Our kitchens celebrate the season, with dishes that let the ingredients speak for themselves, fresh, hearty, comforting. No need to dress up unless you want to; here, dinners feel special, not stuffy. You’ll be looked after, from the first sip of something warming to the last bite of something rich and satisfying.

There’s a joy in sitting down, knowing the food is seasonal, the pace unhurried and the company welcoming.

Pubs glorious pubs

Afternoons in Padstow invite you to slow down. Wander the narrow streets and find pubs tucked behind doorways, some on the harbour, others where the fire roars and the air smells of good food and local ales. Take a seat, pull out a deck of cards, or simply watch the world go by.

Ruby’s Bar is our favourite cosy corner, walls lined with seafaring paintings, a roaring fire and cocktails that can’t be beaten.

Our team is full of tips for the pubs they love most, places where the welcome is warm, the atmosphere unhurried and winter afternoons feel made for sitting by the fire.

Explore further afield

The roads around Padstow in winter are open and unhurried, the kind of drives where you can simply enjoy the journey, rolling fields and sudden flashes of sea. Parking, too, is straightforward. Villages and attractions that brim with visitors in summer are peaceful, so you can pull up, stretch your legs and explore at your own pace.

A favourite day out is the Eden Project, its vast biomes warm and bright even on a grey day, wander through rainforest air while the Cornish weather does what it likes outside. Or drive a little further west to St Ives, where the narrow streets, artists’ studios, and Tate gallery feel like they belong entirely to you. Lanhydrock, with its grand Victorian house and acres of woodland, offers plenty of space to pause.

We’ve thought about the details: mattresses that encourage deep sleep, thread count that feels indulgent, baths that are generous enough to sink into, views that make shoulders drop, and small touches like Porthdune skincare, a book to lose yourself in, or a drink to enjoy. Padstow in winter gives you permission to pause and reset.

Slowing down is sometimes the very best thing you can do.
