Project Pickle – A Community Chutney

16.07.2025

At the core of everything we do here at Rick Stein’s, we believe food has the power to bring people together. Whether it’s over a shared meal or a jar of something special, the act of coming together in the kitchen or around the table is where connections are made and community grows.

Over the past year, we’ve had the privilege of being part of, Project Pickle. A collaboration between our team, Cornish homelessness charity St Petrocs and the environmental champions at Beach Guardian – and it all started with a simple cauliflower seed.

Together, we’ve created a limited-edition Cornish piccalilli that does more than just taste good. Every step of its journey, from planting the vegetables to designing the label, has involved people from across our local community, including St Petrocs’ clients and volunteers. It’s been about sowing confidence as much as it’s been about sowing seeds.

From cauliflower planting at Trevisker Community Meadow to testing and tasting in our Padstow kitchen, every moment of Project Pickle has been a reminder of what’s possible when people come together with care, compassion and creativity. Beach Guardian’s dedication to education and environmental action, paired with St Petrocs’ work supporting those facing homelessness, has made this project one that’s not only close to our hearts – it’s part of our values.

The final result is a deliciously tangy, bright and crunchy Cornish chutney that you’ll now find on the shelves at Rick Stein’s Deli in Padstow. Best of all, every penny of profit from each jar goes straight to St Petrocs to help continue their vital work ending homelessness across Cornwall.

So next time you pop in for a gift or to stock up your pantry, look out for Project Pickle. You’ll be taking home a chutney with a story and making a difference with every bite.
